Foot-marked cable
Box sucks and falls apart. Otherwise the cable does the job.Had to replace a run of cat 5e, so decided to go with cat 6.The cable is well constructed, solid copper conductors, nice even twist on the individual pairs, and the core maintains a good even inter-pair twist.Slightly thicker than the cat 5e it replaced (but that was expected), and slightly stiffer (that was expected too). The extra stiffness helps to avoid making too small radius bends. The only slight negative is the box. It is rather flimsy. It had not survived the tender mercies of Amazon, with a hole punched in it (before shipping apparently, it was in a box much too large for it, with nothing to stop it flying around in the box, but nothing to explain the hole in the box as the outer box was ok). The box was coming open on both sides. A quick dose of gorilla tape fixed that.Given the weight of the cable, a slightly beefier box would be better.I've been using startech products for more than ten years and have always been happy with 99% of thier products. As for this cable, it's the best "boxed" cable I have ever used in 10 years of running cable through commercial & residential installations.(When I refer to it as boxed, I'm referring to Cat5e cable spools in a physical box not an open spool of Cat5e)I've used brands from home stores, cable from elec supply houses and everywhere else in between. I am a huge fan of Belden brand cable on a spool but when pulling 10 runs at a time from an attic down to an office 300' away without a second hand or in tight quarters a spooled cable rig is not always feasible. it's nice to have a readily available product thru Amazon (when I'm in a pinch or distributors are out of stock) a product that won't knot up or get snagged inside the box. Reason is the large mouth and the thick smooth jacket. It also Dosent heat up cause friction related issues halfway thru your pull as most other boxed cables do. This is now my official goto cable! When your pulling 5000' plus feet of cable in a day it's a huge time save to know the product will perform as well as you do!!Excellent value for money! Solid, good flexibility, pulled well. And it's marked every 2 feet. That really, really helps. I didn't have the luxury of pulling from the boxes on my last wiring job - I had to measure, cut, then pull the bundled lengths. A critical part needed to run along a beam some 30' above ground and weight, handling and lack of personnel meant that some tricky ladder work was called for and precluded the idea of anything but laying it out and putting t together on the ground, then lifting and pulling it, already dressed, up top. So the ease of measurement was a significant help. Other than that, it proved to just be good cable. I wish browns and oranges were a bit more distinct though - back at the patch panel, my head lamp LEDs brought the two colors a bit too close together.I’ve been installing cat cabling for 14 years as my job. Lately, prices have gone way up, so I gambled on a cheaper price. Not worth the savings of the cable cost as I had to rerun a very long drop due to the cables thin/ weak jacket peeling. This is a first for me. Pull was less than 20 lbs easily. I’ll stick with what I know works. This is a true copper Ethernet cable and works great as intended. I run this for small patch cords as well as longer runs through the attic and walls of the house. I use this cable for exterior cameras as well. The signal quality is still solid for these cameras using this cable at 197' back to the switch. I'd recommend this cable to anyone that does not plan to use CAT-6 cable in the future.Pros:- Pulls easily from the box- Cables have printed footage on them and is easy to read- Easy to strip and no annoying rip cable to cut out- Works great with POE cameras, don't get hot and no fire issues ;)Cons:- Tends to bundle up in tight loops and kink if not careful feeding the cable up through the ceiling... Nonetheless, even with the kinks the cables held up and tested well.Good wire used boxes without any issues. Easy to strip and terminate. Only complaint I have is a wish the cover was a little more flexible, its a little stiff and kinks to easy in my opinion. This is handy, useful to be in a box that you can just pull the cable out to required length.I would not worry about the terminals on each end, as I cut these off as had to feed under floors and through small holes, so were wasted in my case.I would recommend this if your specifically wiring a home.Great cable at a good priceGreat cable, I think I was shipped a USED box because the label was pre ripped. I don't know if someone else had this as I have never purchased a box of cable before. But the box had the sticker ripped when I received it and the cable was already stuck on the outside of the box. So, hopefully I received the full 1,000 feet, but, no way to tell. It would be nice if these boxes were sealed when you got them so you could tell if someone previously had opened it.As for the cable, it seems to be very high quality. It's nice and stiff, has the center piece in it, the cables are a nice thickness as per the description. I used this cable with Klein crimper and Klein ends. It takes me 1 hour to make 3 cables. I have a tester... I need to get better and faster at making these cables! LOL!.Happy I bought this. I like StarTech stuff (I have 5 KVM's here, HDMI, VGA, DVI adapters, and all sorts of other fun stuff by them - all quality stuff). I have a pile of stuff here made by them. Maybe all boxes are already opened when you get them... I have no idea... will see how the next box is when I run out of this box... and compare the 2 and see if there is any differences. This is not Plenum raised despite the listing title have a the Plenum rated code. The title says CMP but it should say CMR.Always buy StarTech.com cable. It is of the quality I've come to know and trust. Solid core is important as the composite crap just isn't the same. This isn't too thick and so it can still be bent through walls and holes without much issue. I haven't had one fail me yet after running 1000s of feet through all sorts of interiors and exteriors. It has evey held up along the exteriors of some of our buildings at my company during cold and harsh Canada winters (for POE cameras). Again, works great, and for the price difference between this and competitors, just not worth cheaping out.
